Interview with fashion model and influencer from Belgium @Philien_Verhofstadt

LECHERY: First of all, thank you so much for giving us the opportunity to interview you! It is such a pleasure to have you here with us (virtually) of course haha! Let’s first start off by telling us a little bit more about yourself. What do you do?

PHILIEN: I live in Belgium and I am 20 years old. I am the youngest of 4. I study speech therapy and audiological sciences at the University of Ghent but I have chosen to continue in audiology. In my free time I do a lot of modeling. Sometimes I take my guitar to play but that is a hobby that had to make place for my studies. I also sing from time to time.

LECHERY: We see that you're into hosiery and lingerie, what got you into posting hosiery and lingerie? Tell us more about it.

PHILIEN:  In the beginning I did fashion shoots. At a certain moment, a photographer I worked with came with the idea to do a boudoir shoot. I trusted him and I liked the moodboard so that's when I started doing it. From that moment, photographers asked me more often to do lingerie shoots than fashion shoots.

LECHERY: What does lingerie mean to you? Does it give you confidence? Or is it just something you wear to give an added extra sex appeal? How do you feel when wearing lingerie?

PHILIEN: This one is a difficult question because it depends on what lingerie I am wearing. There are lingerie sets I only bought for shoots because it gave me an extra sex appeal. But some of them are "on the small side" and often lead to a nippleslip. With those, I don't feel confident. Some I bought because I really loved it and made me feel sexy. But generally, when I wear lingerie I feel sexy and feminine. In some ways it gives me power and strength. I think lingerie is more than just a piece of clothing. It tells you a lot about someone and makes you feel confident. Some sets are even a piece of art and are just meant to be seen.

LECHERY: What is the perfect pair of hosiery for you?

PHILIEN: I don't wear those. Not because I don't like them but simply because I have none. But the ones I really love are those with lace from above and with a thin fabric. In winter I love those over knee ones with a thick fabric.

LECHERY: Have you ever had a negative experience with a pair of hosiery you have bought? And what brands would you avoid buying from?

PHILIEN: I haven't had a negative experience because I never bought one.

LECHERY: What do you hope to find in the hosiery and lingerie industry in the future?

PHILIEN: I hope to find more special sets because a normal, basic one doesn't say a thing about a person and wearing something special makes you feel special. But it also needs to be comfortable because if the shoulder piece slips off all the time, you won't wear it that often.

LECHERY: What type of lingerie should every girl have in their closet?

PHILIEN: The ones that make you feel sexy and confident. The one YOU love and not those who are "popular". Stand out!

LECHERY: What is one thing you would always wear that would make you feel much more confident and sexy? What is your advice to other women who struggle with confidence and body-image?

PHILIEN: To feel more confident, I would wear my favourite outfit. Something you feel beautiful in. To feel sexy, I would wear a sexy set of lingerie. And yes I mean set because it doesn't have an effect when you wear underwear with cats on it and a beautiful black bra with lace. At least that doesn't make me feel sexy. For me that would be something with lace and no padding. But sometimes I do like a good push-up. The only thing but push-ups I often have problems with, is that after some time it starts to feel bad and it is no longer comfortable.

My advice to other people who struggle with confidence and body-image is: BE YOURSELF! There is no one like you. You don't need to be like "her" to be beautiful. Everyone has its own taste and some people don't like those skinny people while others do. We should be thankful that we are all different in shape, looks, hair, personality,...If we would all be the same, you wouldn't be any better than someone else. The most important thing is to stay healthy and don't do things that are bad for you. Don't compare yourself to others because then you will never be good enough for yourself, you will never be happy. At the end, it is the way we feel, that makes us beautiful. Feeling beautiful and confident, that is TRUE BEAUTY!

LECHERY: Describe lingerie to you in three words:

PHILIEN:  Personal (not private), feminine, expressive

LECHERY: It is a really tough time in today's world with the whole COVID-19 pandemic going on, what have you been doing to keep yourself busy and healthy?

PHILIEN: Going on campfires or walking or playing games. For my mental health I try to think about the things I CAN do and not those I can't. For example: knowing that everyone is home, I get to spend more time with my brother and connect with him. We never had time to go for a walk or to do a campfire and now we do. That's what keeps me going.
